1977 was a pivotal yearwhen punk mutated into New Wave, spawning classics from The Ramones, Elvis Costello, and the Sex Pistols. Yet mainstream charts told a different story, dominated by Elvis Presley, David Soul, and Rod Stewart. Major labels prioritized Abba and Jean-Michel Jarre over The Clash and The Jam. Into this contradiction stepped XTC with their debut 12″ EP, 3D, released September 1977. While sharing punk’s raw energy, XTC brought something the monochrome singles around them lacked: variety, color, and genuine pop craft. These musicians could actually playand write hooks that burrowed into your brain. Three tracks revealed a band already pointing toward their future. Post-punk was emerging as a marketing term, but XTC had already transcended the label, proving they could compete with the best of that magical year.
